January 10, 1869–December 29 [O.S. December 16] 1916) was a Russian mystic who was influential in the later days of Russia 's Romanov dynasty. Rasputin played an important role in the lives of Tsar Nicholas II, his wife the Tsaritsa Alexandra, and their only son the Tsarevich Alexei.
Rasputin had often been called the "Holy Devil" or Mad Monk, although he was never a monk and made no secret of being married. Some considered him to be a "strannik" (religious pilgrim) or ("elder", a title usually reserved for monk-confessors) and believed him to be a psychic and faith healer.
